Contextual Interpretation of Islamic Sources
Wasaṭiyyah, Islam Nusantara, and Pluralism in Indonesia

This article examines the contextual interpretation of Islamic sources through the frameworks of wasaṭiyyah (Islamic moderation) and Islam Nusantara as foundations for pluralism in Indonesia. Although the Qur’an and Hadith affirm diversity and freedom of belief, exclusivist interpretations continue to challenge peaceful coexistence. This study addresses that gap by analyzing how contextual hermeneutics can reconcile fidelity to scripture with the realities of Indonesia’s multicultural society. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach, the study applies contextual hermeneutics and the maqāṣid al-sharīʿah (higher objectives of Islamic law) to Qur’anic verses, Hadiths, and relevant scholarship. The analysis identifies key texts, situates them historically, compares literalist and contextualist interpretations, and applies wasaṭiyyah and Islam Nusantara to demonstrate reinterpretation in practice. Findings highlight three points. First, scriptural foundations such as Q. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:13 and the Prophet’s Constitution of Medina demonstrate pluralism as intrinsic to Islam when read contextually. Second, institutions such as NU and Muhammadiyah, along with cultural traditions like tahlilan and grebeg maulud, embody contextual approaches that sustain pluralism. Third, despite challenges from exclusivism and politicized religion, reinterpretation offers constructive pathways through education, interfaith dialogue, and socio-legal practices. This study contributes to current debates by showing how contextual interpretation, mediated through wasaṭiyyah and Islam Nusantara, provides both theoretical insight and practical strategies for strengthening pluralism in diverse societies.
