Author Guidelines

Authors are highly advised to read the Author Guidelines in preparing their manuscript according to the SEAJIS's specifications to ensure a smooth submission process. Authors are reminded to avoid plagiarism and adhere to the code of ethics of the SEAJIS.

Submission Guidelines

The Southeast Asian Journal of Islamic Studies (SEAJIS), published by Pustaka Mazaya, is an international, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to publishing scholarly works in the field of Southeast Asian Studies. Its aim is to provide a platform for original research, theoretical insights, critical reflections, and the re-evaluation of long-standing perspectives, ideas, and methodologies. Manuscripts published in SEAJIS represent the views of the authors concerned and not necessarily those of the editorial board or Pustaka Mazaya.

The SEAJIS accepts English, Bahasa, and Arabic articles. Manuscripts submitted for consideration of publication in the SEAJIS must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere either in electronic or printed form. The manuscript also must not have been published previously. The corresponding author should declare this when submitting the manuscript to the journal.

Manuscripts should be submitted through the online submission system of OJS. New authors will be required to register as new users before proceeding to the submission stage. Most processes and procedures are self-explanatory, but in case assistance is needed, please email the Managing Editor.

Manuscript Preparation

  • Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition style guide.
  • Articles must be typed in Garamond font, size 12 pt, with single spacing, except for direct quotes and footnotes, which should be in size 11 pt.
  • Articles must include an abstract in English (150-200 words).
  • Articles must include 5-10 keywords.
  • Local and non-English words should be italicized. Arabic words should follow the Southeast Asian Journal of Islamic Studies (SEAJIS) Arabic transliteration guidelines. [Download transliteration guideline here!]

Abstract

Each manuscript should include an abstract of about 250-350 words. For Bahasa or Arabic manuscripts, an additional abstract and title in English must accompany the manuscript. Keywords consisting of three (3) to five (5) words should also be included.

Authorship

All authors named on the manuscript must have made a contribution to the paper, whether in the design and/or analysis and interpretation of the data or drafting of the paper. All authors must have critically reviewed and approved the contents of the final version of the manuscript submitted for publication.

Conflict of Interest

Authors must avoid any possible conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest during the submission process.

Since the journal practices peer-reviewing, authors are reminded not to nominate reviewers who are from the same institution as the authors of the manuscript. Authors should not nominate any individuals who have already read and provided comments on the manuscript or a previous version of the manuscript, as such knowledge would automatically violate the reviewing process. Suggested peer reviewers will be considered in the reviewing process by the journal. If there is no response from the suggested peer reviewers, the journal reserves the right to nominate reviewers.

Acknowledgement

Authors are required to disclose the source of funding for their research in the acknowledgment section according to the following format:

The research work was funded by [Grant’s name] (Grant No.).

Contributors to the article other than the authors listed should be included under the Acknowledgment with specific necessary details.

Timeliness

Authors are advised to be prompt with their manuscript revisions. SEAJIS practices the completion of article revisions within two weeks. If complications arise that delay the manuscript revision, the authors are responsible for informing the Editorial Office to request an extension. Manuscripts with no returned revised submission will be withdrawn from SEAJIS after the expiration date given.

If an author wishes to withdraw a manuscript that has been submitted for intended publication in SEAJIS, the author must inform the Editorial Office of their withdrawal with appropriate reasons.

Copyright Assignment and Permissions

For all articles published in SEAJIS, copyright is retained by the authors. Articles are licensed under an open-access Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, meaning that anyone may download and read the paper for free. Additionally, the article may be reused and quoted, provided that the original published version is cited. These conditions allow for maximum use and exposure of the work while ensuring that the authors receive proper credit.

In exceptional circumstances, articles may be licensed differently. If specific conditions (such as those linked to funding) do not allow this license, please mention this to the SEAJIS Managing Editor. Exceptions will be granted at the discretion of the publisher.

Reproducing Published Material from Other Publishers

It is essential that authors obtain permission to reproduce any published material (figures, schemes, tables, or any extract of text) which does not fall into the public domain or for which they do not hold the copyright. Permission should be requested by the authors from the copyright holder (usually the publisher).

Permission is required for:

  1. Your own works published by other publishers and for which you did not retain copyright.

  2. Substantial extracts from anyone's works or a series of works.

  3. Use of tables, graphs, charts, schemes, and artworks if they are unaltered or slightly modified.

  4. Photographs for which you do not hold copyright.

Permission is not required for:

  1. Reconstruction of your own table with data already published elsewhere. In this case, you must cite the source of the data in the form of either "Data from..." or "Adapted from...".

  2. Reasonably short quotes, which are considered fair use.

  3. Graphs, charts, schemes, and artworks that are completely redrawn by the authors and significantly changed beyond recognition.

Obtaining Permission

To avoid unnecessary delays in the publication process, authors should start obtaining permissions as early as possible. If in doubt about copyright, apply for permission. SEAJIS cannot publish material from other publications without permission.

The copyright holder may give you instructions on the form of acknowledgment to be followed; otherwise, use the style: "Reproduced with permission from [author], [book/journal title]; published by [publisher], [year]." at the end of the caption of the table, figure, or scheme.

Any other materials on this website (including, without limitation, the text, computer code, artwork, photographs, images, music, audio material, video material, and audio-visual material) are owned by The Southeast Asian Journal of Islamic Studies, Pustaka Mazaya, and its licensors.

Manuscript Format and Structure

Author Names, Affiliations, and ORCID

  • All accredited authors’ names must be correctly spelled, written as the published author name in a single line. Names are to be written in the format of last name first, followed by the first and middle name initials (e.g., New, C.Y.).
  • Present the authors’ affiliation addresses below their names. Provide the full postal address without abbreviations.
  • Indicate all affiliations using number superscripts placed in front of the last name. The same superscripts must be used in front of the corresponding address.
  • Each author must have their ORCID provided.

Corresponding Author

  • Clearly indicate the corresponding author with an asterisk (*) in front of their name.
  • Provide only the email address of the corresponding author, placed after the affiliations' address.

Manuscript Style

  • Headings: Main headings should be in bold and appear on their own line.
  • Subheadings/Subsections: Subheadings should be italicized, concise, and appear on their own line. Minimize subsections.
  • Numbering: Number all headings and subheadings accordingly (e.g., 1. Heading, 1.1 Subheading).

The manuscript should include the following sections:

Abstract: Provide an executive summary of the manuscript, including specific aims, a brief description of the method, main results, and conclusions, all in a single paragraph. Avoid references, and non-standard abbreviations must be defined at their first mention. Include the contribution of the study to the international intellectual community.

Keywords: Include 5–10 keywords summarizing the research. Separate each keyword with a comma (,).

Introduction and Literature Review: Provide a brief literature review, relevant previous work (with references), and the research objectives, which should be stated clearly in the final paragraph.

Methodology: Describe methods precisely to ensure reproducibility. Cite known or published methods appropriately, and note modifications if applicable.

Result and Discussion: Result and Discussion should be written in same part and made in line with the research questions/research objectives in the subheading numbers and writing flow. They should be presented continuously starting from main result until supporting results and equipped with further discussion. Discussion section should cover basic principles ranging from analytic, implicative, interpretative, constructive, to comparative. Figures, Tables, and other visualization (if any) should be put in the same part of this section and should be made available for editors to edit. If authors provide any relevant picture, make sure it is in high resolution. Although both result and discussion are writen in the same part, it has to be clear between what the data tells and how it relates to the wider relevant discussion or relevant current theoretical framework.

Conclusion: Summarize the interpretation of results and provide recommendations. Avoid repeating points from previous sections.

Conflict of Interest: Disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

Acknowledgment: Indicate funding sources or contributors to the research in a single paragraph. Keep this section concise.

After Acceptance

Acceptance Notification

  • Accepted papers will be notified via email with an acceptance letter. All accepted manuscripts are subject to an Article Processing Charge (APC) to cover publishing and administrative costs. Exceptions may be granted at the editor's discretion (refer to the APC Waiving Policy).

Proof Corrections

  • Once the manuscript enters production, authors will receive a PDF proof for final checking.
  • Proofs must be returned to the Production Editor within two (2) days. Subsequent corrections may incur charges, so authors are encouraged to check thoroughly.

Article Retraction/Withdrawal

  • If authors wish to retract or remove their article, they must submit a written justification to the Editorial Office. This is discouraged after acceptance due to the journal’s commitment to publishing services and scientific record maintenance.

Article Withdrawal without Notification

  • Failing to respond to acceptance communications within two weeks will be considered an unnotified withdrawal, which is a serious violation of publishing ethics.

Plagiarism Check

The editors will run plagiarism check using Grammarly Premium for the submitted articles before sending to the reviewers. We do not process any plagiarized contents. If a article has over 10% of plagiarism based on the result of Grammarly Premium check, we will send back the article to the author to be revised for the plagiarized contents.
